A new Head Start program in Tulsa will be housed in one of the first school buildings designed with a safe room inside.
The new wing at McClure Elementary school features a space with reinforced concrete block walls and a steel beam ceiling, large enough for all students and staff. The cost of creating spaces like this in existing schools is high, but Tulsa Public Schools is considering safe rooms for future projects.
Jack Arnold with Tulsa Public Schools: "As we look at new buildings we can do some hardening to make safe rooms at very low cost, we've found working with the architect. So we can build a safe room as we build a new wing or a new building, and that's what we're looking at."
Tulsa Public Schools has budgeted $400,000 for safe rooms in a proposed new school bond package.
