SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Clint Carlson threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns in his second career start, and Jarmar Julien ran for 126 yards and four TDs as San Jose State beat Tulsa 63-27 on Saturday.

Lamar Ferguson ran for 196 yards and a TD for the Spartans (2-5, 2-2), who amassed a school-record 746 total yards _ 464 rushing _ and forced four turnovers.

Carlson, who was 22-of-32, had 226 yards in the first half for the Spartans, who lost their first five games under first-year coach Fitz Hill before winning the last two. Carlson has thrived after taking over for Marcus Arroyo, the starting QB last season.

Tulsa (1-6, 0-5), which has lost six straight games by an average of 23.3 points, let the game get away by allowing three touchdowns in a 3:09 span in the third quarter. Julien started the spree with an 80-yard TD run.

Carlson threw a 15-yard TD pass to receiver Edell Shepherd early in the third quarter. Shepherd, who had two TDs, finished with 10 receptions for 125 yards, his fourth straight 100-yard game.

San Jose State linebacker Ethan Allen then intercepted Tyler Gooch's pass and returned it 69 yards for a score, putting San Jose State up 42-13.

Donald Shoals had 12 catches for 110 yards, including a 24-yard TD pass from Gooch in the first quarter. Gooch rushed for 102 yards and completed 26-of-42 passes for 196 yards, but also threw three interceptions.

Deonce Whitaker, the Spartans' leading rusher for the past two seasons, had just four carries for 57 yards. He spent much of last season as the nation's second-leading rusher behind TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson.
