Adolescent substance abuse in Oklahoma
[Information from the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services]

  • In Oklahoma, nearly 15,000 adolescents are chemically dependent
  • The top three drugs of choice for adolescents are
    • Alcohol
    • Marijuana
    • Methamphetamine

  • Methamphetamine use among Oklahoma teens has increased 80% in the past two years

The Oklahoma Department of Education, Title IV incident report for 1999-2000, notes the following related directly to the possession, sale or use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs at school:
  • 6,417 students (elementary, middle, and high school) were referred for disciplinary action
  • 2,819 students received out of school suspensions
  • 1,931 students received in school suspensions
  • 1,158 students were expelled
  • 861 students were placed in alternative education
  • 416 students were arrested
