Safer mailboxes, stopping mail theft

Updated:
Mail identity theft is serious problem nationwide. Every day thousands of people are robbed of their good name, good credit and peace of mind, it’s lifted right out of their mailboxes. A local company is working to change that.

News on Six reporter Patrina Adger talked to a victim. “It's just terrible and it's just consumed my life which I don't like” We first introduced you to June Dixon 2 years ago, when thieves stole a batch of new checks, right out of her mailbox. "And I called the credit union to put a stop on the checks, well the next day, 5 got through."

“You can't say it's theft proof but it's theft resistant. No one can reach in to get your mail and they're not going to be able to pry your door off." This is safeTmail, a key accessed mailbox developed right here in Tulsa. Marty Greene with Circuits, Inc. says it's as close to a vault as you can get. The heavy-duty box is made out of cast iron, the inside made out of sheet metal. “To access your mail you have a lock in key, in the back, and you have 3 cubic feet of storage space, so you can be gone for some time."

A normal mailbox is easy to open, easy for thieves to go in and get your mail. But with safeTmail, it's hard for thieves to get inside. But the price of privacy comes with a steep price tag. "It's $399 retail for the mailbox." And that's not including the brick. "We've had them installed in wood, we've had them installed in stucco, we've had them installed inside a home a business, depends on how they want to put them up.”

But the price of safeTmail doesn't compare to the thousands of dollars you could be out, if a thief gets in your box. "You have to realize what's it worth to you, you know, it takes 5 years to get out of mail fraud."

So far, Circuits Inc. has sold more than 3,000 safeTmails nationwide. If you'd like to know more about safeTmail you can access their website at www.safeTmail.com.
