TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) _ The body of a newborn baby was found inside a box alongside a state highway in northeastern Oklahoma, authorities said Tuesday.
The infant's body was found about 9 p.m. Monday alongside Oklahoma 82 south of Tahlequah, said Jessica Brown, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
The body was been sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Tulsa, Brown said, and the OSBI is assisting the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office in the investigation.
Brown said she did not know how the baby was found or whether it is the body of a boy or girl and referred questions to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Delena Goss did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
