Union Schools' mascot comes under renewed attack

As we near the start of the school year, the controversy over the Union Redskins mascot is growing.

The Tulsa Indian Coalition Against Racism wants the Union School Board to change the mascot. Now the group is joined by the NAACP and the National Conference for Community and Justice.

Opponents of the Redskins nickname say the term is derogatory and offensive. Supporters have tradition in their favor. TICAR member Louis Gray, "We're not here to be confrontational, but we want them to know the will is here to see this thing through."

Mascot supporter and Union School parent Shirley Wondra, "My older son went to school here and it was an issue back then, so it has been an issue for a really long time. I think it should be the same, should stay the same. I think the Indians should be honored for using them as a mascot."

A decision on the future of the Redskins mascot is expected by the end of the year.
