Tulsa's flood insurance rates drop

Updated:
Tulsa's flood prevention work pays off in the form of lower insurance rates. The federal government upgraded Tulsa's status to the best in the nation - meaning flood insurance rates will drop for every home in the city.

News on 6 reporter Emory Bryan says Tulsa used to the kind of town that flooded with just about every rainstorm.

Now, after decades of work to control the problem - and prevent new flooding, Tulsa as a whole jumps to the best flood rating in the country. Tulsa still has large areas that are subject to flooding - and there are still homes and businesses in the way of floodwaters. It’s not uncommon for heavy rain to cause problems - but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be.

Because of the progress Tulsa has made, the government is giving Tulsans a break on flood insurance. There are about 10,000 homes in the floodplain in Tulsa. Only about a fourth of those have insurance.

The city is hoping the cheaper rates will encourage more people to get the insurance, which costs about $225 dollars a year for a $100 thousand dollar home.
