(Boston-AP) -- Former state Senator Paul Muegge has been given a John F- Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.
Muegge was honored in Boston Monday for his efforts to protect the environment.
He's credited with leading the fight to pass what are considered some of the toughest laws in the nation to regulate hog and chicken farming.
Also receiving Kennedy Awards today are former North Carolina state Representative Cindy Watson and Afghan Doctor Sima Samar.
Watson co-sponsored legislation to regulate the hog farming industry and Samar defied the Taliban to fight for rights of girls.
The award is given each year to public servants who stand up to strong opposition and is named for President Kennedy's 1957 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, ``Profiles in Courage.''
