McALESTER, Okla. (AP) -- Health officials say no new mothers are taking advantage of a law that allows them to give up their newborn babies anonymously without facing prosecution.

Lawmakers passed the law in 2000 after 15 women were charged with abandoning their babies between 1987 and 1997. The law allows mothers to take their babies who are three days old or younger to any fire department, police department, hospital or other medical facility.

A spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services says they have been unable to find any cases where mothers took advantage of the law.
