A Tulsa company helps the networks cover the political conventions

Updated:
Those who can't make it to Boston for the Democratic National Convention can, of course, watch it from our own living rooms.

That's possible because of a Tulsa company, WilTel's Vyvx division, which transmits video for news, sports and other special events. News on 6 reporter Patrina Adger explains.

“This is a very large event for us. The Democratic National Convention is probably the single largest event we've done." And Vyvx will broadcast the convention to more than 16 medical outlets, from CBS to FOX news and CNN. Vice president Derek Smith says the Tulsa-based company transmitted live events from their control room in the WilTel building for the past 15 years. “We help bring mission critical live content whether it's the Academy Awards, the Democratic National Convention, the Republican National Convention. We help through fiber connectivity bringing those events back to the broadcasters which can then show them at your home."

A signal from the event is transmitted to the control room; the video is then transmitted to CBS in New York who then broadcasts the picture straight to your living room. It's a service to customers, which Smith says is very secure. “It's across fiber networks which we have total control from a security perspective."

Vyvx provides more than 200,000 video feeds a year.
