Oklahoman makes the U-S gymnastics team

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ Few people were more surprised that assistant Oklahoma gymnastics coach Guard Young made the U-S Olympic team than Young himself.

Young was named to the six-man U-S team in mid-July after a five-day camp to determine the final two team members.

He says he was in disbelief when he heard his name and didn't even notice who the team's alternates are.

Though Young's father Wayne was captain of the 1976 U-S gymnastics team, Young wasn't born with the natural flexibility required of gymnasts.

But through years of working with coach Mark Williams, Young developed the flexibility and the determination reach his goals.

He leaves Tuesday for Athens, Greece, in an effort to accomplish his goal of helping the U-S team win a gold medal.
