South central Oklahoma air quality suffers from Texas smog

LAKE TEXOMA, Okla. (AP) -- Air quality in south-central Oklahoma during the summer is getting a failing grade from the American Lung Association because of ozone pollution.

Environmental officials attribute the poor air quality readings in Jefferson and Marshall counties to smog carried from the Dallas area.

Officials with the federal Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Environmental Quality say they take issue with the report. They say the report fails to reflect that every county in Oklahoma meets federal clean air standards.

EPA spokesman Dave Bary says ozone can be transported many miles on air currents and have an adverse effect on other areas many miles away.
