NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY

Across the East, lake effect snow showers combined with a low pressure system off the Maine coast brought scattered snow showers to much of the Northeast. Accumulations were generally light, however a few locations near the Great Lakes received heavier snowfall. Fairport, New York recorded four inches of snow. Skies were cloudy over the Ohio Valley before snow moved into the area during the evening. The Southeast, Deep South, and Mid-Atlantic regions were partly cloudy to mostly sunny throughout the day.

In the central region, snow showers developed over the northern Plains and Midwest. Periods of heavy snow were reported in Iowa and Wisconsin during the afternoon.

Gusty winds created blowing snow over eastern North Dakota. Skies over the central and southern Plains, along with the Mississippi Valley were partly cloudy with dry conditions.

Over the West, rain continued to fall over the Pacific Northwest. Many rivers and streams reached bankfull and continued to rise during the morning hours. Several towns in both Oregon and Washington were flooded The Chehalis River at Centralia, Washington rose almost 25 feet in less than 24 hours, putting the town underwater. Rain and snow showers also developed over the northern Rockies, but precipitation was light. Skies were cloudy over northern California, the Great Basin, and central Rockies, while skies were partly cloudy and dry in the Desert Southwest and southern Rockies.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY

In 1941, Enosburg, Vermont rose to a high temperature of 72 degrees, which set a record for the warmest temperature for the month.

In 1953, Vicksburg, Mississippi was hit by a violent tornado. 28 people were killed and 270 were injured.

In 1984, 10 inches of snow fell in Skiatook, Oklahoma.

FRONTS ACROSS THE NATION

A warm front stretches over northern South Carolina, far western North Carolina, far eastern Tennessee, far western Virginia, northern Kentucky, southern Indiana, Illinois, and southeastern Iowa.

A cold front extends over southwestern Iowa, Nebraska, far southwestern South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and Montana.

NATIONAL WEATHER FORECAST

In the East, light snow showers are expected over the Ohio Valley, the southern Great Lakes, and the Mid-Atlantic states today. Accumulations of two to five inches of snow are expected over these areas. Elsewhere, scattered lake-effect snow showers are expected over parts of upstate New York, accumulating two to four inches over most of the lake snow-favored areas. Dry conditions are expected over the Carolinas and the Southeast. Highs will be in the 20s and 30s over the Northeast and the Great Lakes, while upper 20s to the 40s are expected over the Ohio Valley and the Mid-Atlantic states. Highs in the 40s and 50s are expected over the Carolinas and the Tennessee Valley, while 50s and 60s are expected over the Deep South. 70s and 80s are expected over Florida.

In the western two-thirds of the Nation, a light wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected over the northern Plains states. Meanwhile, snow showers are expected over the Rockies and the upper elevations of the Northwest, accumulating about one to three inches over most areas. Partly cloudy skies are expected over California and most of the Intermountain West, as well as in the Southwest. Partly cloudy and dry weather is expected over the remainder of the Plains states and most of the Midwest. Highs in the upper single digits to the 20s are expected over the upper Midwest, while highs in the teens to the 40s are expected over the northeastern Plains states. 30s and 40s are expected over the lower Midwest. 40s to the 60s are expected over the northwestern Plains, while 50s to the 70s are expected over the central Plains. Highs in the 50s and 60s are expected over the lower Mississippi Valley, while 60s and 70s are expected over the southern Plains states. In the West, highs will be in the 30s and 40s over the Rockies, while 50s and 60s are expected over the Northwest, the northern High Plains, and the Intermountain West. Highs in the 60s and 70s are expected over the central and southern Plains and the Southwest. Highs in the 50s to the lower 80s are expected over California.
