Bonds Connects For 760th Home Run, Extending Record

Updated:
MIAMI (AP) -- San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds hit his 760th career home run Saturday night, connecting in the fifth inning off Florida's Rick VandenHurk to extend baseball's all-time record.

Bonds hit a 1-0 fastball well over the wall in right-center field for his 26th home run of the season, a two-run shot that sailed an estimated 444 feet and gave the Giants a 4-3 lead. Bonds rounded the bases slowly as VandenHurk bowed his head and shuffled
some dirt around with his feet.

A ball was thrown back onto the field one pitch after the home run, causing a brief interruption in play, but it wasn't known if that was the actual one Bonds struck.

It was the second time in four at-bats Bonds homered off VandenHurk, who yielded Bonds' 754th home run back on July 27. VandenHurk struck Bonds out in his first two plate appearances Saturday night, looking in the first and swinging in the fourth.
