OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The mother of a nearly 2-year-old girl and the mother's boyfriend have been arrested in the girl's death, police said Tuesday. Police officers were called to St. Anthony Hospital Monday afternoon "in reference to a 23-month-old deceased child," said Sgt. Gary Knight.

The girl, identified as Olivia Scroggins of Oklahoma City, had visible trauma to her body, Knight said, and homicide detectives interviewed her mother, Wendy Scroggins, 22, and Kerry Smith, 21, before arresting the two on complaints of first-degree murder and child abuse.

While speaking to family members of the victim, officers noticed a 9-month-old child in their care who also showed signs of trauma and abuse.

The infant was also treated at the hospital for what Knight said appeared to be non-life threatening injuries and was placed in protective custody.

The girl's body has been sent to the state medical examiner to determine how she died.

Scroggins and Smith were being held in the Oklahoma County Jail.
