NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - As Oklahoma celebrates its 100th year of statehood Friday, another anniversary will be on the minds of many.

It was November 16th, 1957, 50 years ago, when the Oklahoma Sooners still-record 47 game winning streak came to an end in a 7-0 loss to Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish had lost two straight and OU was a heavy favorite going into the game.

But Notre Dame held the Sooners to 145 yards and scored the game's only points on Dick Lynch's 3-yard touchdown run with just minutes to play.

Irish captain Dick Prendergrast says his team was outclassed by Oklahoma, but Notre Dame played above their ability.

A crowd of about 62,000 sat stunned long after the game in what Irish coach Terry Brennan says was a deafening silence.

No Division One team has come closer than a dozen wins of reaching 47 straight since. Toledo won 35 in a row from 1969 to 1971 while Miami and Southern California have each won 34 straight.

The longest current winning streak is 10 by Hawaii and Kansas.

Mount Union of Division Three holds the overall NCAA mark with 55 straight wins, and it also owns a 54-game streak.
