It's a program that helps Tulsa children understand and prevent prejudice.  It's called Different and the Same.  News On 6 anchor Jennifer Lorne had the pleasure of teaching the program to a second grade class at Jackson Elementary School over the past nine weeks.   She reports it's been a great experience for her and a valuable lesson for the students.

Second graders in Mrs. Burkeen's class are eager to learn how we're all Different and the Same.  As a volunteer, Jennifer Loren visited the class once a week and played a video depicting difficult situations at school.

Animal puppets are the main characters in the video.  The children learn along with the puppets that it's not right to be prejudiced or racist or to stereotype.

After each video, there is a classroom discussion about the puppets' situations and ways they would handle similar situations in real life.

In the end, the kids get certificates of completion and a lesson in equality that will hopefully last forever.

Volunteers come from the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, and they need more of them.

If you're interested in volunteering you can call the OCCJ at 583-1361.
