Company Puts A New Spin On Lights

The future of energy efficient and environmentally friendly lighting fixtures is being developed now by a company in Broken Arrow.  The News On 6's Rick Wells reports they give off a brighter light and use less electricity than anything else on the market.

It's not an incandescent bulb or the newer more efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.  It's even newer and more efficient than that.  The light source is an LED device, using light emitting diodes which use less electricity.

A demo was set up in downtown Broken Arrow's Centennial Park and the meter attached to the lights hardly moved.

Buddy Stefanoff with DaTran Lighting says the bulbs will last about 10 years. 

In a world lit by bulbs and tubes that require regular replacement, 10 years seems like almost forever.

"It just bolts right in," said Buddy Stefanoff.

They manufacture LED replacements for existing fixtures. The difficulty is, for now, they're more expensive.   But, over time, they are more efficient and more cost effective.       

An Energy Department study they quote says nearly a quarter of the electricity we use powers lights, so if we could get more light for less power we'd save.

The light they give off is very bright, so they recommended people wear shades to look directly at it.  The fixtures are designed to replace fluorescent ones.  Fewer of them produce more light.

The units are manufactured in Broken Arrow, so they can maintain quality control.  The first LED application they produced was a hublite.  LED lights which flash as you drive.  They've expanded that part of the business with LED kits to light up any vehicle.
