CommUNITY Through Music Set To Kick Off

If you've lived in Tulsa long you know the annual Juneteenth celebration used to be a lot bigger deal than it seems to be today. Organizers say Juneteenth's large crowds started to get out of hand, so now things are different.

The celebration is no longer on Greenwood and crowds seem to be split up between different, smaller events.

This year the Jazz Hall of Fame will sponsor an all-inclusive Juneteenth celebration with OCCJ, the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice.

"This is 2008. We've got to learn to come together, enjoy music together, work together and share in this wonderful community called Tulsa. And of course the wonderful state called Oklahoma," said Chuck Cissel of the Jazz Hall of Fame.

The celebration is called "CommUNITY through Music". It begins Thursday night at 7:30 at the Jazz Depot, tickets are $19 or if you prefer a free concert, the Juneteenth celebration continues this Saturday with Jazzfest. It's at 1st and Cincinnati from 6 p.m. to midnight, don't forget your lawn chairs.
