On a field of green, football players who refuse to go to pasture play down after down. They're determined to lengthen dreams and take a recess from reality.
"Once you love something, it's hard to put it down and leave it alone," said Volta Mitchell. "There's just something about being on that field, getting tackled and being touched all the time. It just does something to me."
The smiles, the scene and football stage keeps 37-year-old Mitchell playing the gloried game.
"The day you all stop talking about me is the day because it just keeps me coming to the point where I'm out here playing and show all you guys I'm going to stick with you all," Mitchell said.
Mitchell's the oldest player on the WFL's Oklahoma Thunder. He's a prominent piece on one of the league's best teams. Mitchell has caught a pair of touchdowns playing tight end this season.
"I look at it and I'm 37 doing the same thing they're doing. I'm no father to them," Mitchell said.
Mitchell's age hasn't caught up with him yet. He'll play his labor of love as long as he can take the body beatings.
"These guys out here will run you ragged. I try my best to really stay in shape and stay healthy. If my mind and my body feels like it can go another year, then I will," Mitchell said.
