Explosive Device Discovered In Park

An explosive device found in a Norman city park Wednesday morning has been detonated.  The Norman Bomb Squad exploded the device.

A Norman Parks Department employee found the homemade bomb while picking up trash in Eastwood Park.

"I just picked up the pill bottle, and then I realized what it was. And, there was a cigarette butt laying there, too, as if they'd tried to maybe light it," said Jeremy Boggs with the Norman Parks Department.

Police say the cigarette had been lit and was supposed to ignite a fuse, but the cigarette went out too early.

Norman Police say the pill bottle was filled with fireworks and BB's and really couldn't have hurt someone. 

After finding it, Jeremy Boggs took the device back to the department's maintenance building and called police.

The building had to be evacuated and the bomb squad called in.  Boggs feels fortunate it didn't explode in his hands.  And, he says if he'd known what he knows now, he never would have picked it up.
