The Tulsa School Board and its current superintendent have agreed to part ways. Now, the board's turning its attention to filling the top job. News On 6 education reporter Ashli Sims reports talks continue with a man, who's no stranger to Oklahoma schools.

Two years ago it took TPS four months and thousands of dollars to find their man. This time around they already have someone in mind.

Just moments after the Tulsa School Board agreed to part ways with its current leader they were discussing a new one.

"Frankly it dawned on me that Dr. Ballard might be an ideal candidate for Tulsa Public Schools," said Matt Livingood of the Tulsa School Board.

It was an unusual suggestion from long-time school board member Matt Livingood.

The district paid almost $20,000 for a national search firm, conducted focus groups and considered 45 applicants from 22 states. Dr. Michael Zolkoski sat down with community leaders, parents, and the media before he landed the job.

This time around, the board is considering a candidate they know well. Dr. Keith Ballard is currently the executive director for the Oklahoma State School Board Association and has helped train the Tulsa school board. Ballard says he's thought about returning to the job as superintendent for years.

"I liked it. I like the superintendency. I like the opportunity to make an impact on kids," said Dr. Ballard.

Ballard has 14 years of experience, leading Oologah Public Schools in the 80s and early 90s and Claremore Schools from 1992 to 2000.

But Ballard has never managed an urban, diverse district. In fact, TPS is six times as large as both of his previous districts combined. Ballard has never served as a superintendent, under No Child Left Behind, a federal law mandating student achievement.

"I don't know if we're going to find a 100% fit anywhere with anybody," said Livingood.

That being said Livingood says Ballard has a lot to bring to the table.

"That superintendency experience is important. The relationships within the community are important. His ability to build consensus and inspire people are important," said Livingood.

Bringing the community together seems high on this candidate's agenda.

"What you have to do is you have to bring the community together. And I've had some experience with that and being a consensus-builder. I'm a highly collaborative person," said Dr. Ballard.

The Tulsa School Board is still just talking to Dr. Ballard. They have not met with him as a group, although that could happen soon.
