KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The stepfather of 3-year-old girl once known only as "Precious Doe" files motions seeking more access to his lawyers and more prison recreation time.

Harrell Johnson, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, is charged with first-degree murder in the 2001 death of Erica Green. The girl's decapitated body, and later her head, were found in a wooded area of Kansas City.

If convicted, he faces the death penalty.

Johnson appeared with his attorney Friday for a status hearing. But he also wanted to discuss the motions he filed the night before, without his lawyers' knowledge.

Johnson and his wife were arrested and charged in Erica's death.

Erica's mother, Michelle Johnson, has pleaded guilty and as part of the plea agreement agreed to testify against her husband.

The trial is scheduled for October 6.
