Camp Builds Young Rocket Scientists

What are your kids doing this last full week before school starts? Swimming? Watching television? Playing video games? News On 6's Rick Wells found one group of first through third graders building rockets. It's the last of the Tulsa Air and Space Museum's Summer Aerospace Camps.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to recognize it's too hot for a camp outdoors. So, how about an indoor camp about rocket science?

For many of the students in the camp, it's their first experience with rocket building.

Darrell Wright is the instructor. He's been volunteering at the museum for ten years. He has helped kids build hundreds of rockets. The rockets they're building are reusable.

"They get the rocket back in one piece. They put a new engine in it and do it again," said camp instructor, Darrell Wright.

The campers were organized into teams of four. Each team selected a name. Team names included Iron Man, Team of Beatles, The Astros, and The Mars Aliens.

Launch day is on Thursday.

This was the last of the Tulsa Air and Space Museum's 11 summer camps. They schedule more throughout the school year.
