Giraffe Dies At Zoo

A female giraffe at the Tulsa Zoo died over the weekend. 

"Georgina" had been at the zoo for nearly 21 years. 

While the official cause of death will not be determined until test results can be evaluated by zoo veterinary staff, initial findings point to complications from a lost pregnancy.   

"We are all saddened at the loss of our female giraffe, Georgina," said Tulsa Zoo Director, Stephen Walker.  "For the 20 years that Georgina called the Tulsa Zoo home, she brought smiles to all of those that worked with her and the many thousands of guests that visited her in her African savannah home with her mate, Samburu."              

Georgina had resided with the zoo's male giraffe, Samburu, who was born at the Tulsa Zoo in May 1992.   

Currently, the Tulsa Zoo is looking into options to add to its giraffe collection in the near future. 

"Her death is a sad misfortune for giraffes in captivity, for her keepers, and for the Tulsa Zoo's visiting public," said Walker.
