The selection of Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska by John McCain to serve as his running mate has Republicans in Green Country excited, but Democrats say it's a desperate move by the GOP.  News On 6 anchor Scott Thompson reports it was one week ago when Barack Obama announced his running mate and lit a fire under his supporters.  On Friday, the same happened for Republicans who say McCain's choice for VP sends a clear message.

As supporters cheered Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin in Ohio, Republicans in Tulsa were celebrating as well.

"I am extremely excited. I think this is an important step Republicans and I think it's an even more important step for women," said Joy Mohorovicic with the Tulsa County Republican Party.

Governor Palin is a staunch opponent of abortion rights and a lifelong member of the NRA.

"I think she has new ideas, fresh ideas and I think she'll bring a whole new outlook to this election," said Joy Mohorovicic with the Tulsa County Republican Party.

"I think this sends a signal from the McCain/Palin campaign that they're going to change Washington.  Washington should be on notice," said Republican Congressman John Sullivan of Tulsa.

Critics point to Governor Palin's inexperience in high-profile public office, and lack of foreign policy experience.

She's been Alaska's governor for two years and previously served as city councilor and mayor of her hometown, Wasilla, a town forty miles from Anchorage whose website lists its population as 6,700.

"I do see it as a desperate ploy and I am all about women running for public office," said Elaine Dodd with the Tulsa County Democratic Party.

Tulsa County Democrats chairwoman Elaine Dodd says Palin's selection is a sign that Senator McCain is feeling pressure to pump life into his campaign.

"The only thing he could do was pick a gender related issue to try to bring some enthusiasm to his ticket," said Elaine Dodd with the Tulsa County Democratic Party.

Dodd also hopes the choice will end the Republican criticism of Barack Obama's lack of experience.  But, Republican leaders counter that Governor Palin's role in Juneau, makes her a better leader than Obama.

"Governor Palin has tremendous experience compared to him and more. She has executive experience," said Republican Congressman John Sullivan of Tulsa.

Both sides say the race eventually comes down to McCain versus Obama and while the VP selection is important it doesn't necessarily make or break the campaign.

Before Friday's announcement, the latest polls showed Obama leading McCain by 8%.
