TULSA, OK -- Many of us are always looking for easier ways to stay in touch with family and friends. If you ever use a webcam or are considering one, you may want to proceed with caution.

They may help you see your loved ones instantly, but some people are using them for all the wrong reasons.

You may think you're alone in the privacy of your own home. In reality, if you're not careful, someone could be watching you through your webcam.

"As more and more people are using the technology, webcams, to see friends across states then it does become a problem because your criminal element will find a way to use that information to their advantage," said Sgt. Tim Stadler, Cyber Crime Unit with the Tulsa Police Department.

Sgt. Stadler says most hackers do it just for the thrill of being able to watch you and see what you're doing.

"It is difficult to track because you have to try to figure out where they're coming from and a lot of times they'll hide their tracks from where they're at," said Sgt. Stadler.

So how do hackers do it? In most cases, it's a simple e-mail that opens you and your home up to watchful eyes.

"As far as the ladies go, they'll receive an e-mail that says, ‘you have received a greeting, click here.' And when they click on the link, the criminal's actually leading them to the installation of the hacking software directly into their computer just by clicking the link. And now, the suspect has control of your computer and watch their webcam."

Webcam hacking is illegal. It's a felony and you could face up to ten years in jail if you do it.

It's rare that it happens, but it can and does. Several years ago in Tulsa, a person used a webcam to commit a burglary.

"They actually were able to watch the webcam and watch when the victim left home and so they were able to break into the house without, in their mind, being seen," said Sgt. Stadler.

Detectives say the best way to protect yourself against this crime is by installing anti-virus and anti-spyware software and a firewall.

"As soon as you let your guard down is when you become a victim of a crime in reference to the computer world," said Sgt. Stadler.
