Tulsoar Flying High

BIXBY, OK -- The owners of the sod farm in Bixby allow members of the Tulsoar remote-controlled soaring club to fly on their expansive lawn due to the low-impact nature of their sport.

"We don't leave any trash, we don't use fuel and we don't make any noise," said Tulsoar member D.O. Darnell.

The high-tech gliders are towed aloft with battery-powered tow lines. And due to the temperate weather and number of these sod farms in the area, Tulsa is considered an excellent place to fly these expensive planes.

"If there's good thermal activity you can keep these planes up a half-hour, an hour, people have even kept them up two, three hours," said member Don Harban.

The bald eagles living in the trees neighboring the farms even like to investigate the gliders from time to time. Talk about soaring with the eagles, the members of Tulsoar have actually done it.

"It's an obsession," said Don.
