TULSA, OK -- The state tax commission is offering a clean slate program, inviting people to pay back taxes without paying a penalty.

Taxes are certain, but the penalty for not paying taxes is not. The state tax commission is willing to forgive penalties and fees if people who owe back taxes pay up right now.

The tax commission promotes the plan on television with an appeal to people who owe back taxes.

"Now until November 14th you have a one time opportunity to pay certain Oklahoma back taxes and we'll waive all interest, penalties and fees," says the TV ad.

And tax commission staff is out on the road explaining it.

The program is designed to encourage people to go ahead and pay any back taxes they owe.

"You basically get a clean slate with the Oklahoma Tax Commission," said Bruce Smith.

The Clean Slate Program is Valid through November 14th.  It applies to state taxes only, but includes the major personal & business taxes.  During the program, the state will waive all fees and penalties on back taxes.

Smith says the program is perfect for people who have put off paying taxes for whatever reason.

"I know sometimes I'm surprised at the number of people who already have the returns prepared, but they sit on them because they can't afford to pay it then," said Smith.

While the clean slate program offers a carrot, it also comes with a stick.

"Miss this window and the original penalty will double," said the ad.

The state legislature authorized the program and doubling the penalties once it's over.

Smith says the goal is to give people a chance to come clean.

"You have the tax out there and the penalty is accruing and the interest is accruing and you can get upside down where the penalty is greater than the tax," said Smith.
