The catch and run and the thudding feet. You've just been beat by Dustin Gehrke.

"I'm always looking to make that big play," said Gehrke, a Grove senior. "I always look for those holes, especially on punts. If I see that little opening I'm going to be gone."

He's averaging nearly 20 yards every time he touches the ball, has six touchdowns and has put Grove in a groove.

"He's been a game-breaker in that when he touches the ball, everybody holds their breath to see what's going to happen," said Grove coach Dennis Millican. "He's fearless. He's just a heck of a football player."

Success is nothing new for Gehrke. He's won three state pole vault championships and a team wrestling title. Now he's giving the 6-0 Ridgerunners a chance to run the table in 4A.

"We'd win football, and then I'd be wrestling and track," Gehrke said. "To be a three-sport state champion would be crazy."

Gehrke's golden accomplishments are rubbing off onto his teammates and there would be no better ending then holding up a 4A Gold Ball.

"I think we're more of a team this year then we were last year," Gehrke said. "We may not have as much athletic talent or people who can break the big plays. We all work together and are there for each other. We're like a family."
