No Radiation Leak In Fire

TULSA, OK -- A fire broke out Monday morning at the Lafarge Rock Crushing Plant in Rogers County.  There was initial concern that the firefighters who responded to the blaze at 2609 North 145^th East Avenue may have been exposed to a radioactive material used at the plant.

That's because the radioactive element is protected by a lead box that had been exposed to the flames.  But, after a complete inspection, plant managers were able to confirm that the dangerous materials hadn't leaked around the plant.

"We have a radiation safety officer, so he's trained on these materials.  He went up to the source.  He has his indicator, checked out the area, the source is still intact.  So nobody was exposed," said plant manager Jim Bachman.

Fire officials say the fire started because of a mechanical failure on the conveyer belt used to make cement.
