JENKS, OK -- The annual "Jenks Trojans versus Cancer Scrimmage" to benefit an individual being treated for cancer and raise cancer awareness will be held Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Frank Herald Gym at Jenks Public Schools.

The scrimmage is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:00 p.m. The event will feature four top Oklahoma teams including rivals, Jenks and Union.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America has agreed to serve as presenting sponsor for the scrimmage.

Proceeds will benefit Richard Gonzalez, grandfather of Eric Hansen, a junior Jenks Varsity player. Mr. Gonzalez, a Tulsa Central graduate and dedicated Jenks basketball fan was diagnosed with Stage IV liver cancer four years ago.

Following a grave prognosis, he continues to receive treatment and battle his cancer. Mr. Gonzalez's message is to "keep on truckin'" and be an inspiration to others fighting cancer.

This is not the first time Mr. Gonzalez has had to beat the odds. Over the course of a lifetime, he has survived other life threatening conditions and injuries. But his love and dedication to sports, including his personal golf game, Jenks basketball and Jenks football have kept him going.

Now, with grandson Eric Hansen a Jenks 11th grader who plays Jenks football and varsity basketball he's always looking forward to the next game.

Jenks, Union, Booker T. Washington and Edison high school varsity basketball teams are in the tournament. It will be an early look at the Jenks veteran senior squad, featuring University of Tulsa commit Bryson Pope.

The schedule for the scrimmage is:

  • 9:30 am Jenks vs. BTW
  • 10:45 am Union vs. BTW
  • 12:00 pm Jenks vs. Edison
  • 1:15 pm Union vs. Edison
