TULSA, OK -- Firefighters were locked in an hour-long fight with an apartment fire Saturday morning.

More than 16 Tulsa Fire trucks and 75 firefighters helped to get the fire at the Sand Dollar Apartments at 61st and Riverside under control.

Even the Oklahoma Air National Guard came in to help with supplies, specifically oxygen as firefighters ran low.

Fire investigators say the fire started on the backside of one complex, but strong winds quickly spread the flames into the attic.

"The wind was a big problem, as we've seen across the country this week, but they managed to shut it off at this building and keep it from spreading to the other apartments," said Tulsa Fire Captain Stan May.

In all, 12 apartments burned, but half of the units had no one living in them.

Firefighters say everyone got out safely.

Fire officials say a preliminary investigation by firefighters found that a fire started in the kitchen of one of the apartment units.

Officials say at this time a damage estimate is not available.
