TULSA, OK -- With the cold weather creeping in, more and more people are starting up those fire places.

That also means more and more house fires, and that's something firefighters say you can't always help, but you can be prepared for.

On Monday, Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog was out with firefighters teaching kids how to survive a house fire.  She spent part of the day at Celia Clinton Elementary.

"There's something about the visual effect of a dog when a dog demonstrates how to crawl low under smoke or how to stop drop and roll, children retain that a lot better than just me standing up there visiting. So, that's something they'll remember and take back with them," said Sparkles' owner Dayna Hilton.

Sparkles lives in Arkansas, but she actually has a Tulsa connection.  She was rescued by the Tulsa Dalmatian Assistance League from a local home with more than 60 dogs.
