TULSA, OK -- Some are cutting corners even when it comes to the necessities.  One money saving guru was in Tulsa on Monday teaching Tulsans to shop smarter.

Many people believe it's simply a fact of life that we are going to spend a lot of money at the grocery store.  Nationally syndicated radio show host Clark Howard says absolutely not.

"If somebody becomes a really dedicated shopper where you organize with coupons and all the rest, you'll cut your grocery bill in half," said Clark Howard.

Howard is a savings maniac.  And, he's absolutely full of penny pinching advice.

The News On 6 followed Howard around a Tulsa Reasor's to cash in.

On the cereal aisle, he says you should pull a switcheroo on your kids.

"There ain't anyway that my kids are going to eat this if it's in this bag. But, if this is in this bag they're going to eat it and I'm going to save a fortune," said Clark Howard.

Speaking of being tricky, Howard says marketeers are pulling tricks on shoppers.

"We have been conditioned that the larger a package is the better a deal we're getting per ounce or per unit or whatever it is.  Not anymore. Because what the marketeers learned is that you can charge more for an item per ounce the bigger it is because people won't check," said Clark Howard.

That's why he says never leave home without your calculator.

"And, I am such a nerd I have one on my watch," said Clark Howard.

Howard also advises that you never shop hungry, always clip coupons, make a list and stick to it and buy generic when you can.

"Now that may sound like too much work to some people. It's a lot easier to save money than it is to make it," said Clark Howard.
