OKLAHOMA CITY -- A report shows bankruptcy filings increased by at least 22 percent in all three of Oklahoma's federal district courts.

One court official said medical expenses and divorce are the most common reasons for the increase.

In the last year, the call volume has jumped significantly.

"People who file bankruptcy were considered dead beats and that's not the case at all," credit counselor Diane Farrar said.

Oklahoma City Bankruptcy lawyer Patrick Moore, whose client list has jumped an unusual 15 percent in the last few months, said many clients are from the auto industry.

"I have them drive in with a Mercedes and driving a pickup truck," Moore said.

Farrar said she'd like to see more people call early for help, that way counselors like her can help find solutions to avoid bankruptcy.

Credit counseling is available for those facing bankruptcy.
