NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY:

In the eastern states, an area of low pressure is moving up the southeast coast. Snow is occurring from C Carolinas to C VA. Rain will continue to slowly change over to all snow over the Carolinas with total accumulations of 4-6 inches possible. Areas of lake effect snow continues in western NY/PA/OH and light snow is occurring from NY to ME. A line of thunderstorms continues to move through the FL peninsula.

In the central states, light snow continues over the MS valley and the northern plains with little accumulation. Lake effect snow bands will affect areas of N IN/SW MI/E WI. Localized areas could see up to 2-4 inches. More substantial lake effect snow is occurring off the Lake Superior from just south of Ashland WI to Hurley, WI/Ironwood MI thru the Keweenaw Peninsula to Marquette, MI. Some areas to the east of Marquette this evening had 6 inches of accumulation in less than an hour and a half. The snow bands continue through the overnight hours.

Across the west, high pressure remains over the entire region from the Rockies to the Pacific coast. Low clouds and dense fog remain in some of the valley regions of OR, WA and ID but it was not as widespread as the past several days. Elsewhere, mild readings remained in place across most of the Southwest. Skies were mainly clear across the entire southwestern U.S. except for some high cloudiness spreading northwards from Mexico.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:

In 1961, On JFKs inauguration a major winter storm moved up the east coast with Washington D.C. picking up 7 inches of snow. Much more snow was recorded across the Northeast U.S., including 28 inches for Warwick, RI.

In 1977, extreme cold across the eastern U.S. plunged all the way south into southern FL. It was so cold that for the first time ever in recorded history, snow fell in Miami, FL. Trace snowfalls were also recorded in Homestead, FL and the northern FL keys.

In 1994, record cold encompassed a large portion of the US from MN to the Mid Atlantic region with 67 record lows were set. All time record lows were set for Indianapolis, IN (-27); Akron, OH (-25); Dodgeville WI (-33); Louisville, KY (-22); Wisconsin Dells, WI (-36); and Cleveland, OH (-20).
