Tulsa's Overall Crime Rate Dropped In 2008

TULSA, OK -- The Tulsa Police Department has released Crime Statistics for 2008 and the numbers for the most part are good news.

The 2008 stats are for crimes that are reported to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program.

According to a news release from Tulsa Police, the city of Tulsa's overall crime rate dropped 3.2%. Police say the city saw decreases in auto theft of 37.5%, homicide down 14.5%, a decrease in rapes of 15.7% and burglary were down 1.7%. Auto thefts saw the biggest drop with a 37.5% decrease.

Aggravated assaults were up 11%, robberies up 7.1% and larcenies were up 1.7%.

The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program collects data for two crime categories, violent crime and property crime.

Violent crimes consist of murder, rape, assault and robbery. Property crimes are the offenses of burglary, larceny and auto thefts.
