OKLAHOMA CITY -- A study by the Insurance Research Council has found nearly one in four Oklahoma drivers are uninsured.

The study includes data from 2007 and shows 24 % of Oklahoma motorists have no insurance and that the economic slump may increase the number of uninsured drivers.

The rate is the fourth-worst in the nation and the study found the number of Oklahoma drivers without insurance had risen from 15 % in 2003.

Only New Mexico with 29 %, Mississippi at 28 % and Alabama with 26 % had higher rates of uninsured drivers.

Nationwide the number of uninsured drivers fell from 14.9 % in 2003 to 13.8 % in 2007.
