TULSA, OK -- A Tulsa Police Airport explosive detection dog is retiring this week.

Romeo has worked at Tulsa International Airport since April 1998.

Tulsa Police say Romeo has had one of the longest careers of any dog in their explosive detection program. His duties at the airport included checking unattended luggage and routine patrols for the public's safety.

In a news release, police say Romeo has had a distinguishing career while serving with the Tulsa Police Department. Some of his assignments included protective detail for former British Prime Minister John Major in 1998, for the US Open Golf Tournament at Southern Hills Country Club in 2001, and for former Vice President Dick Chaney in 2003, 2004, and 2008.

A retirement party is being held Wednesday at TIA at 1 p.m. in the airport's main lobby.
