TULSA, OK -- If you're an active knitter, there are only so many afghans, scarves, hats and shawls you can knit for family and friends before they begin to say no thanks.  A Tulsa group called the Knittin' Kittens has found many eager recipients for the hundreds of projects they create in their weekly knitting sessions.

They get together once a week and bring in projects they've been working on, many have a particular specialty.

"They give hope to the little children," said Marke Crouch.

Marke Crouch crochets Hope Blossoms.  She says they require a small investment in time, but produce big rewards.

Everyone in the group is creating something for someone else.

"To me it's a mission, doing for somebody something," said Willy Vanderborn.

Willy Vanderborn was one of the founding members of this group.  She says knitting produces something.  Now they're producing that something for someone who needs it.  Some are making scarves.  Another is using a plastic form to make a hat.

When they're done they turn in the project and start on something new.  The inventory accumulates quickly.  Last year, they provided several thousand hats, scarves, preemie blankets and other items to hospitals, charities and schools that needed them.

In December, they passed out hats and scarves to students at McClure Elementary.

It's a labor of love for the ladies and Stan Stanley.  He learned to knit two years ago when he retired.  He says he is less of a Knittin' Kitten and more of a yarn engineer.

In fact, many members don't knit.  They crochet.

The Knittin' Kittens operate through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program or RSVP.  You can contact the group by calling RSVP at 918-280-8656.
