LINDSAY, Oklahoma  -- McClain County election workers are accustomed to long days with few voters showing up, but never before have they come to work on an election day expecting no voters at all.

Tuesday was a municipal election day in Lindsay, just to the south in Garvin County, and because Lindsay recently annexed a piece of land in McClain County, the McClain County Election Board Secretary was required to open a polling place and assign workers at Banner Baptist Church.

"I told them not to expect any voters because we don't have anyone on the registry that is eligible to vote in a Lindsay municipal election," said Marilyn McReynolds, McClain County Election Board Secretary.

The piece of land annexed by Lindsay is a cemetery, and the residents there don't normally vote.

The election workers settled in for a long haul, bringing puzzles and food to pass the time.

The hours ticked by slowly and time weighed heavily, but the precinct stayed open.

The law required the precinct to be open.

Because it was a municipal election, the city of Lindsay will pay the cost of keeping the polling place open.
