Tulsa 911 Dispatcher Describes Dramatic Call

TULSA, OK --  A 911 dispatcher spent ten minutes on the phone with a victim from Tuesday morning's Tulsa apartment fire.

That call to the Tulsa dispatcher was her lifeline until a Tulsa firefighter was able to rescue her.

Jeff Pestel works the graveyard shift at the 911 Center at 800 East Oklahoma Street.

He was on duty when the 911 call from the Royal Arms Apartments came in early Tuesday morning.   He spent the next ten minutes on the phone trying to calm the victim, who we know only as Nikki.

He instructed her to feel her bedroom door.  Because she told him the door was hot, he told her to leave it closed and to get down on the floor and cover herself with a blanket.

He then calmly reassured her time and again that help was on the way, until firefighters carried her out of the fire.

The victim was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
