OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Fire Department has been awarded a federal Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) grant which will restore 29 positions that were eliminated last year due to budget cuts.

Fire Chief Keith Bryant received the good news from Senator Jim Inhofe's Tulsa office about the grant.

The Oklahoma City Fire Department utilizes a year-round hiring process; therefore, the department's goal is to hire a new recruit class by the late spring of 2011. These new recruits will fill positions and enable the department to re-deploy fire companies and vehicles that were placed out of service when the positions were eliminated.

The grant is for a maximum of $3,651,587 over a two-year performance period.
