Firefighter Dies in Blaze, 4 Others Injured

The Caddo County Sheriff's Office says a fire at a grain elevator in Hydro has killed one firefighter and injured five others.

HYDRO, Oklahoma -- The Caddo County Sheriff's Office says a fire at a grain elevator in Hydro has killed one firefighter and injured five others.

Sheriff Gene Cain says one of the five firefighters was seriously injured and the other injuries were not life threatening.

Hydro Fire Chief Nolan Schmidt was killed in the fire. Assistant Fire Chief Warren Schmidt, Nolan's brother, Hydro Fire Department Captain and brother of Nolan, Paul Schmidt, Allen Entz with the Hydro Fire Department and Kyle Nonaste with the Weatherford Fire Department were also injured in the line of duty.

About 10:30 a.m., a soy bean storage bin caught fire at the grain elevator in downtown Hydro off State Highway 58. Hydro and Weatherford firefighters fought the blaze.

Crews continued to fight the fire through the afternoon. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Hydro is about 70 miles west of Oklahoma City.
