SAND SPRINGS, OK -- Thanks to some welding craftsmanship and salvage know-how, the Sand Springs' equipment maintenance division has built the city's newest plow-sander truck with parts and equipment for several other outdated city vehicles just in time for winter.

The city of Sand Springs was needing a new plow-sander truck after one of its older plow-sander trucks had reached the end of the road last winter.

According to a news release, with the budget tight and Sand Springs unable to purchase a new truck, Sand Springs officials say the city's equipment maintenance division went to work.

Mechanics took two older but still serviceable trucks and made them into a plow-sander truck.

In the end, it took just $2,000 to get the new plow-sander truck up and running Two veteran mechanics, Randy Vaughn and Vernon Grayson, took the lead in building the truck, according to Fleet Maintenance Superintendent Brandon Barnes.

"The guys like the see equipment continue serving the citizens if there's useful life left in it, and the plow truck should still have several good years of service," Brandon Barnes said. "A lot of pride and resourcefulness went into its creation."

Mechanics Dale Hughes and Glenn Barnes also pitched in.

Sand Springs Streets Division Foreman Perry Lankford said the truck is a welcomed addition to the fleet.

"Plowing and sanding routes are a driving challenge even in the newest and best trucks. This ‘new' truck will give us another tool in our arsenal when Mother Nature hurls her worst wintry weather at us," Lankford said. "It will be available for the inevitable emergency situations we have with each winter storm, and can pick up the slack on plow routes if another truck breaks down."
