TULSA, OK -- Some local law enforcement officers spent Wednesday evening training for an incident like the one at KBEZ.

The point of this training is to make sure that Green Country agencies are on the same page, and use the same tactics, if they are confronted with a gunman.

The officers were looking for a lone gunman in the halls of Will Rogers High School.

They were simulating tactics they say Tulsa police officers used Wednesday when a man began waving a gun inside a local radio station.

"Today is just a prime example of how important this training is. The officers that responded, all information that I've got, they handled it in an outstanding manner," said Capt. Chuck Jordan, Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.

"Because we've done some of this training in our department, they were able to identify this circumstance as a potential active shooter scenario, and they immediately intervened, stopped that suspect from potentially killing one or many people," Capt. Ryan Perkins, Tulsa Police Dept.

About 150 officers from at least 10 different agencies took part in the training. Experts say sharing tactics for 'active shooter scenarios' is crucial.

They say mass shootings over the past decade have changed law enforcement's approach to them.

Instead of waiting for the swat team, every officer must now be prepared to confront the gunman.

"We're training our people so they can successfully complete this mission without waiting for more people. Speed is a big issue," Jordan said.

That speed came in handy Wednesday and the tactics these officers meticulously practice may have saved lives.

"They went in and took care of the situation and resolved the issue with absolutely no injuries to officers or innocent victims. That's our goal in this whole deal," Jordan said.

Tulsa Police say the exercise was one of the largest tactical training operations ever conducted in northeastern Oklahoma.
