UNDATED -- The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety are encouraging state residents to learn from the Christmas Eve 2009 blizzard as they make preparations and plans for the season's next winter blast.

"Considering the December 24th storm we just made it through, there are a few things motorists need to think about if they must get out," said Captain Chris West, Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesman.

"Make sure you have plenty of fuel, dress appropriately, have a fully charged cell phone, and extra blankets in the car just to name a few."

State troopers, road crews, and other emergency responders will be out in full force if the state gets the serious dose of ice and snow that's predicted. Additionally, citizens will be encouraged to limit travel during severe weather and the hazardous road conditions that occur with ice and snow.

"We're working very closely with both state transportation, and turnpike officials to insure that state resources and personnel are maximized to their fullest during this weather event," said Public Safety Commissioner, Kevin L. Ward.

"Hopefully, employers across the state are developing plans for employee delays and absences," said Ward.

In last month's blizzard, the state experienced roadways cluttered with literally thousands of vehicles after travelers were caught in the blizzard and abandoned their vehicles. Many of the cars and trucks were left in travel portions of the roadway compounding the situation for emergency workers and road crews.

"We're asking everyone to think back to last month's storm, and do their part in reducing the chances for a repeat; most importantly, use common sense and don't put yourself and others at risk," West said.

Citizens will be able to get updated road condition information by either calling the DPS road condition phone line at 405.425.2385 or accessing the DPS road condition web site at Oklahoma Department of Public Safety
