Members of the church say workers were repairing a heating unit and that's likely what started the blaze.

The church's main building was not damaged in the fire.

St. James Baptist Church members said they are devastated by the fire, but the congregation of about 250 will survive.

"We are a strong community", said church member Belinda Cummings.  "We will come back and rebuild."

The church, near N.E. 36th Street and Hiwassee Road was built in 1934 and was renovated about 10 years ago.
