TULSA, OK -- The Oklahoma Department of Transportation will open up a temporary diversion road for westbound traffic on I-44 in Tulsa Tuesday.

ODOT says as part of the project to widen I-44 and replace bridges at Darlington Avenue, westbound I-44 traffic will be shifted onto a temporary diversion road.

This detour is between the 41st Street bridge and Yale Avenue and is on the north side of the highway.

The speed limit will be 45 MPH.

Drivers will still have access to the Yale Avenue exit. Darlington Avenue underneath I-44 will remain closed during this project.

ODOT says motorists can expect delays and are urged to use extreme caution while traffic adjusts to this temporary shift.

Also in the next few weeks, drivers can expect eastbound I-44 traffic to shift onto the existing westbound lanes, which will allow the contractor to start work on the eastbound lanes and bridge at Darlington.

This phase is expected to take several months to complete.

ODOT says these projects will widen eastbound and westbound I-44 from four lanes to six between Yale and the 41st Street bridge, and replace the bridges over Darlington Avenue.

Officials say it is not part of the on-going "I-44 Riverside Dr. to Yale Ave." widening project. However, it is part of the overall plan to make widening improvements throughout the I-44 corridor in Tulsa.

The $11 million project began in January and is scheduled to take a year to complete.
